WP: More than two years after Taliban fighters streamed into the Afghan capital, seizing power here and vowing to cleanse the country of Western decadence, many of them have come to embrace the benefits of urban life. Some Taliban members are already developing expensive taste. AFP: Authorities in the Afghan province of Kandahar, the birthplace of the Taliban, ordered officials on February 18 not to take pictures or videos of “living things.” In a letter addressed to civilian and military officials, the provincial department of the interior directed them “to refrain from taking pictures of living things in your formal and informal gatherings, because it causes more harm than good.”
dba: A relatively strong earthquake hit Afghanistan’s northern province of Balkh on February 18. The 5.0-magnitude quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the United States Geological Survey. Haji Zaid, the Balkh governor’s spokesman, said on social media that there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
