8am: An old man died in a hospital after being severely tortured by the Taliban in Panjshir province. Sources on Tuesday, January 17, confirmed to Hasht-e Subh that Khal Mohammad died of his injuries in a hospital, adding that he had been arrested by the Taliban in Omarz village about 15 days ago. Sources detailed the Taliban had taken Khal Mohammad to Panjshir emergency hospital after severely torturing him. But the man died on Monday, January 16, of his bad health condition and critical injuries. Click here to read more (external link).

Ariana: Pakistan has expressed concern over what it says is an increase in militancy along the border with Afghanistan. Speaking to Newsweek, Pakistan’s permanent representative to the United Nations Munir Akram warned that unless the economic situation in Afghanistan improves, the Islamic Emirate could begin to lose members to more militant groups including IS-K (Daesh). He said Pakistan is determined to deal with militant groups such as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Balochistan Liberation Army and the regional ISIS Khorasan (Daesh) branch internally.

Khaama: According to sources, the National Security Council-Pakistan informed the Afghan government that to fulfil its obligations under the Doha Agreement, including bilateral meetings, Kabul would have to neutralize the TTP threat. 
Tolo News: At least 16 people died in four different provinces in the past four days as a result of the severe cold wave in the country. According to the State Ministry for Disaster Management, these deaths happened in Badghis, Nimroz, Faryab, and Ghazni provinces. More than 3,000 cattle also died due to exposure to the cold weather. 
8am: 3 Taliban fighters were reportedly killed in a mysterious blast that took place yesterday at Kefayat Center on Darul Aman Road in Kabul. Sources in Kabul city told Hasht-e Subh that the blast occurred on Sunday, January 15, at the house of a Taliban fighter in the residential complex. 
Ariana: Human Rights Watch has called for the International Cricket Council (ICC) to follow through on its own anti-discrimination policy and suspend Afghanistan from ICC membership. The organisation’s director of global initiatives Minky Worden said the suspension of Afghanistan from participating in international cricket should stand “until women and girls can once again participate in education and sport in the country”. 
Geo: Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) Sunday approached the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to play a series other than the decided ICC Super League games between the two countries after Australia decided to call off its series with the Afghan team. A reliable source in the PCBhas confirmed that it has received a request from the ACB to play three ODIs in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in March this year.
