Massoud
8am: Following the recent border conflict between the Taliban and Iranian border guards, Ahmad Massoud, the leader of the National Resistance Front (NRF), tweeted a stanza of Rumi’s famous poems, indicating that he had warned Iran not to go to the Taliban as he himself was the true acquaintance of Iran. This tweet provoked a widespread response and elicited various reactions from the people of Afghanistan and Iran. Despite the reactions, the content of Massoud’s tweet for the first time officially revealed that the relationship between Massoud’s Front and the Iranian government was not in a good state, and his attempts to persuade the Iranians to support him financially and morally had failed. Previously, the official stance of the Iranian government towards the events that had occurred in Afghanistan over the past two years had demonstrated that the Iranian government viewed the Taliban as a trusted partner and felt elation over their victory against the “Western-backed regime”. Even once, one of the officials of the Iranian Foreign Ministry had declared the resistance against the Taliban to be an American project. The gist of the story is that Iran believes it has a role in bringing the Taliban to victory, and thus, it considers this group to be indebted to it, believing that this group is able to serve Iran’s interests in Afghanistan in a beneficial way. Iranians are so determined to maintain their relationship with the Taliban that one of them, in his reaction to the border clashes between Iran and the Taliban, which resulted in casualties, deemed these conflicts to be minor and referred to them as “family disputes”. Ariana: A number of farmers around Kajaki Dam in Helmand province say their agricultural land and gardens are drying up due to the lack of water. The farmers have called on the government to manage the Helmand River water so that water reaches their fields. “We are facing a water shortage. We are in dire need of water and we use a water pump. While the water is not enough for us, how can we give water to Iran?” asked Abdul Jabbar, a farmer in Helmand. “We can give water to Iran only if our water increases or if our dam stores enough water to meet our needs,” Shah Wali, another farmer in Helmand, said. This comes after Iran’s warnings last month about the lack of water from the Helmand River feeding into Iran. They accused the Islamic Emirate [Taliban] of blocking the water flow and of violating a 1973 water treaty.
8am: Recent fluctuations in the relations between the Iranian government and the Taliban have sparked discussions among Afghans, as well as among politicians, analysts, and media activists. Speculations about the future of Iran’s relationship with the Taliban have emerged. Some argue that Iran made a mistake in defending the Taliban and is now seeking to rectify it. These arguments can be categorized into two groups: one suggesting that Iran’s support for the Taliban was temporary, perhaps even due to a miscalculation, and the other asserting that Iran’s support for the Taliban is deliberate and strategic.
AP: The education official said the person who orchestrated the poisoning had a personal grudge but did not elaborate. It is thought to be the first assault of its kind since the Taliban swept to power in 2021 and began to crack down on the rights of Afghan women and girls.
Ariana: After reports of corruption and the move by the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) to take control of Afghanistan’s embassy in New Delhi, the Indian government has said the issue is an internal matter which does not involve them. Representatives of Afghan refugees living in India have accused officials at the Afghanistan embassy in Delhi, including the ambassador, of corruption. The embassy denies the allegations.
