The end game: Britain’s role in Afghanistan 1947–50

british_flagHistory Extra: From the 1920s to 1940s, Afghanistan acted as a buffer state between the British empire in India and the Russian/Soviet empire. Although not governed directly by Britain, as India was, Britain controlled Afghanistan’s foreign policy and paid the government to maintain stability.
