NEW DELHI, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) — India approved the signing of an extradition treaty withAfghanistan on Monday, just two days ahead of a scheduled state visit by Afghan President Ashraf Ghani.

“The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the signing and ratification of the Extradition Treaty between India and Afghanistan,” an official statement said.

“The treaty would provide a legal framework for seeking extradition of terrorists, economic offenders and other criminals from and to Afghanistan,” it added.

President Ghani will be in India on Wednesday for a two-day visit, during which he will hold talks with Modi on a wide range of “matters of mutual interest” and likely to seek more military aid.

“The visit will provide an opportunity to continue the close and frequent consultations between the two friendly neighbors, including at the highest level,” the Indian External Affairs Ministry said.

“Such interaction is the hallmark of their strategic partnership and has guided the strengthening of all-round cooperation between the two countries,” the ministry added.
