Foreign Tourists Attacked In Western Afghanistan

A group of foreign tourists escorted by an Afghan Army convoy has been attacked in the western province of Herat.

Jilani Farhad, the spokesman for Herat’s governor, said at least six tourists and their Afghan driver were wounded in the August 4 attack in Chesht-e Sharif district.

Farhad said the tourists, who included eight Britons, three Americans, and one German, were on their way to Herat from Bamiyan and Ghor provinces when they were ambushed by the Taliban.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack, which comes as Taliban militants intensify their annual summer offensive.

Afghanistan’s main roads have become increasingly dangerous, with militant attacks and kidnappings frequent.
