Afghanistan picks up first medal at 2016 South Asian Games

Close to 200 Afghan athletes (wrestlers, boxers, handballers, etc.) are currently in India participating in the 2016 South Asian Games, officially called the XII South Asian Games. Afghanistan won it’s first medal today – a bronze in wrestling. Host country India is currently in the lead with the gold medal count at 14, however, Sri Lanka is in the lead with the overall medal count at 21.

The games are being held in two India cities, Guwahati and Shillong. A total of 8 countries (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka) are participating in the event, which is scheduled to end on February 16th.
