Officials in Afghanistan’s northwestern province of Faryab say a young woman in a remote village has had her nose cut off by her husband.

A photograph of the woman posted online has sparked anger in Afghanistan, with activists demanding punishment for the attacker.

Hospital officials in the provincial capital of Maymana say 20-year-old Reza Gul was brought to the facility on January 18 after the attack against her a day earlier.

Medical workers at the hospital were trying on January 19 to arrange transport for her to go to Turkey for further treatment.

Gul’s husband, 25-year-old Mohammad Khan, has fled their village to a Taliban-controlled area since the attack.

Domestic violence against women is widespread in Afghanistan.

Hafizullah Fetrat, the head of Faryab’s provincial human rights commission, says violence in the area has risen by at least 30 percent during the past year.
