The Chief Executive of Afghanistan, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah is wrapping up his three-day visit to Iran where he met with Iranian leaders, officials, business professionals, and Afghan refugees.
Before leaving for Kabul on Wednesday evening, Abdullah visited the important port city of Chabahar. Afghan officials are hoping that the Chabahar port can be a strong alternative to Pakistan when it comes to exporting goods from their landlocked country, especially since relations with Pakistan are not very good. Furthermore, many Afghan traders complain of discrimination and high costs when moving goods through the Pakistani port in Gwadar.
Iran also warmly welcomes the use of Chabahar by Afghanistan. Pajhwok Afghan News reported today that a senior economic adviser to the Iranian president assured Abdullah that Afghan entrepreneurs who invest in Chabahar port will be exempted from visa restrictions, custom duties, and taxes.
