who were living

Afghanistan back then; but
their total number have been
highly exaggerated- probably
five to ten thousands
permanent residents who
were mostly descendants of the
merchants from English/India
colonial period or the ones who took refuge in Afghanistan after the
partition of the
Indian
SUB-CONTINENT.

There were citizens of those faiths who were, even, serving the armies of Afghanistan.

The main preoccupation for the Sikhs/Hindus, who were residing permanently in Kabul, was spice shop keeping in downtown busy bazaars marlkets ((saroys))- they were mainly very visible in that type of business.

I am pretty sure that probably many other types of nonresident merchants of various provisions from India were visiting Afghanistan for business.
The diplomatic and business relations with India was historically always good and, in fact, friendly after early 1920’s.

As I remember, as a kid; my grandma was telling me that there was a small worshiping place for the Sikh in Charikahr, ((the Capital of Parwahn province)), that was open for public to visit- the only one
place in whole of Shamahli Provinces of Parwahn, Kahpeesah and Punj-Shayr.
I am not sure of exact population of Kabul city in late 70’s- probably, just a few hundred thousands to the most less than half a million- claims of such a very high number of Hindus and Sikh could have easily made them much more visible and interactive with the locals which was not the case.

I did not see them much except at the spice and some fabric markets where they were carrying merchandise from India in their shops in Kabul.

The economy was never that good for the Hindus and Sikhs to migrate into Afghanistan in large numbers.
